Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- identify a topic of personal or professional interest in the area of TESOL;
- engage in discussion with a tutor concerning how this topic might be investigated;
- under supervision, carry out reading and study, and, if appropriate, research on this topic;
- under supervision, write up the study in an appropriate form.

Learning outcomes

Students who complete this module will have the knowledge needed to carry out a search of the literature on a chosen topic and an understanding of how to carry out small scale empirical research.

Syllabus

Students negotiate their dissertation on an individual basis at a dissertation proposal meeting held with their Academic Tutor.
Students are expected to attend the ‘Research Methods for TESOL’ seminar series.
Students will be allocated a dissertation supervisor who will discuss their dissertation proposal and meet with them on a regular basis as the study progresses.

Private study

The information against seminars in the first line of information against tutorials and the information against online learning relates to the work involved in in attending the “research methods for TESOL”. The second line against tutorials relates to supervision of the Dissertation.
Tutorial Support:
- Additional tutorials may be held by agreement between the student and tutor.
Students may audit EDUC5060M as part of this independent study
Private Study:
- 20% of this time to be spent on reading on professional development in TESOL
- 30% on data collection
- 30% on data analysis
- 20% on writing up the dissertation.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored through the tutorials related to the ‘Research Methods for TESOL’ seminar series and the supervision meetings.
